Fontane was a European par excellence. His travels as an author and correspondent took him to Denmark, France, Great Britain, Italy, Austria and Switzerland. When Fontane reported as a journalist to Berlin from his office in London or Copenhagen, he was already living and working as a cultural cosmopolitan, while his German homeland was still lingering in the Biedermeier restoration period. Neben der Spur [Journey of Discovery], a European Festival of Travel Literature, engages with the European foundations of Fontane’s creative work and connects them with the place where he remained anchored throughout all his reflections – his home town of Neuruppin in what was once the County of Ruppin. Well-known authors and journalists will be relating and reflecting on their travel experiences, or even presenting them in literary form, at this event to be held in Neuruppin from 21 to 24 May 2010. All modern acoustic and visual media will be deployed – without allowing classic travel reporting to be squeezed out altogether. Join us on this journey into the ‘geopoetical spheres’! This event is being sponsored by Kulturstiftung des Bundes.
